Use and care guide

Washing

Immediately after use, hand wash your board. Using liquid dish soap is fine but avoid harsh concentrated cleaners. Do not place in the dishwasher or let soak in water. It is best to hand dry your board after washing, however if you choose to air dry - do not lay flat on a surface when damp. As a best practice for air drying, prop up the board to allow airflow on all sides.

Reconditioning

Recondition the board when necessary. Frequent use and wash cycles will cause the finish on the board to diminish after a while. The finish will not affect the use of the board, however, to maintain the luster and figured appearance as well as extend the life of the board it is advised to periodically recondition.

Included with our boards is a tin of “Balloon Wax” which is our own formulation of board finish for use in reconditioning. Simply take a small amount of the paste from the tin with a lint-free cloth or towel and buff into the board until all surfaces including the edges are coated. Let sit for 10-15 minutes and buff the excess off.

Additional board butter can be purchased from our store, or the following can be used as substitutes:

  • Food grade mineral oil - typically found at pharmacies.

  • Butcher block oil - typically found at home improvement stores and lumber yards.

Never use any food-based oils (olive oil, vegetable oil, etc.) as they can turn rancid in the wood band begin to cause a foul odor.

Sanitizing

Sanitize the board after prepping raw meat like steak or chicken.

Spray or rub white vinegar on the board. Let sit for a few minutes then wash as normal.

For stubborn stains or odors, salt and half a lemon can be used. Sprinkle the salt on the board and rub with the lemon half. Wash as normal.
